9 hero vanity solutions
Nothing is more practical than washing your hands, checking your hair or cleaning your teeth – however, these vanities soar beyond the pragmatic, playing the hero in their bathroom designs
1. Striking the right note
Part of a wider interior by Diego Revollo Arquitetura, this vanity includes wooden drawers in Pau Ferro wood – famously used in guitar construction – with a glossy finish on the outside and polished on the inside.
2. Standout in a standout location
This august bathroom complete with refined vanity is part of a Thames-side penthouse's comprehensive and luxurious (think late-period Picasso on the wall) makeover by interior designer Jo Littlefair of Goddard Littlefair.
3. Not born to follow
A Rubi vanity cabinet in colour Cuzco Cobre with a Hi Mac White benchtop, from Robertson Bathware, offers a natural focal point in this contemporary home by Landmark Homes North Shore /Rodney. The owners loved the vanity colour and this led the colour palette in the bathroom.
4. Hidden strengths

You can't hang out like this cantilevered vanity without some serious backbone – in this case a steel beam provided the honours. The bathroom is by Sonja McAuliffe, of Archertec Interiors, while the vanity is painted Dulux Natural White with the benchtop in spotted gum.
5. It's like a jungle sometimes
First to greet the eye, the wall-hung vanity in this bathroom – by Carla Molyneaux and Gaynor Rodgers, Melanie Craig Design – is a pleasing composition of rectangular floating elements, backed by a dramatic jungle wallpaper and large-format black tiles. The custom vanity is by Leading Edge Joinery with the benchtop in Concrete Formwood Natural, by Euroedge.
6. Wonderful in wood
Marine grade teak makes a statement in this ensuite pod and vanity, part of a design by Pippa Paton of Pippa Paton Design. "For the ensuite we designed a T-shaped teak ‘pod’ to house shower, double vanity, floor-to-ceiling storage and display niches and screen the WC from view," says Paton.
7. Mum, there's another feather in the basin
Kevin Toukoumidis and Bob McFadden of dSpace Studio designed the dynamic home that this bathroom appears in. The vanity is pretty dynamic itself, with a wall-mounted pourer emerging from a wall of plumage. The wild pendant is perfectly at home in the eclectic, edgy space.
8. It's official – wood floats
Part of a home, designed by Bronwyn Aldridge of Brilliant SA, this solid wood vanity – floating and underlit to effect – commands attention within the bathroom. The vanity is in solid timber – Australian Wormy Chestnut – with black melamine interiors.
9. Dramatic atmosphere
Part of a house by South Architects, this ensuite is nothing if not moody – the wood cabinetry is matched with a black benchtop and brass fittings. We're not even going to mention the wild wall finish. Oops.
