Watertight case

It may not be new, but its longevity says it all. For the past 100 years, Neuchatel's Mastic asphalt waterproof membrane has kept local buildings dry

Sophisticated technology is a key feature of both the design and the fit-out of the new Vodafone premises. But one of the most important materials used in the building's construction has remained virtually unchanged for the past 100 years.

Mastic asphalt waterproofing membrane from Neuchatel was specified for the plant room roof and for the large podium area in front of the building.

Neuchatel manager Royce Whitehead says the company first began using Mastic asphalt membrane on New Zealand buildings in 1905. And, while the product has been slightly refined, today's membrane is essentially the same.

"Recently, the company went back and looked at projects completed 50 years ago. They are still going strong, with no need for replacement materials," he says. "The longevity of Mastic asphalt is testimony to its ongoing effectiveness."

For the Vodafone project, two layers of Mastic asphalt were laid to create a waterproof membrane that is 20mm thick.

Whitehead says Neuchatel provides a full range of long-lasting waterproofing solutions for a wide variety of situations.
