Whether it's a beachside apartment or a townhouse overlooking the canal, developments by Cedar Woods make the most of their aquatic location

Quiet seaside towns and inland waterways areamong the locations most valued by homeowners looking for a weekend retreat or a main residence away from the bustle of a big city.

That's the experience of developer Cedar Woods, which has completed projects in some of the fastest-growing areas of Western Australia, says project manager Peter Starr.

"We're seeing significant revitalisation and growth in Mandurah and Rockingham, both areas where we've chosen to develop," he says.

The Waterline project in Halls Head, outside Mandurah, comprises 18 high-end apartments on a stretch of north-facing beachfront.

"A north-facing beachfront aspect in Western Australia is very rare it means that you're not looking into the hot westerly sun in the afternoon, and you're protected from the rain and storms from the south-west," he says.

Architectural firm Hames Sharley designed the four-storey building, incorporating curved balconies along one elevation to reflect the movement of lapping waves.

The coastal theme extends to the interior, where casual, beachside colours and textures are paired with high-end finishes and appliances.

In the open-plan kitchens, Quartz-based Q Stone benchtops have fragments of seashells embedded in them. Details such as the colour-back glass splashbacks complement the homes' contemporary design. The master bathrooms incorporate an open bathing area, and the showers feature 180mm rain showerheads and recesses finished with marble pebble tiles.

The apartments have a fully ducted air conditioning system, recessed low-voltage lighting and a security system with intercom and card access. Appliances include Miele stainless steel appliances in the kitchens and front-loading Bosch washing machines and dryers in the laundries. Secure parking for two cars is also standard, with three spaces for the penthouses.

In Cedar Woods' Landings development at Mariners Cove in Mandurah, shown above, architectural firm Donaldson and Warn has designed 20 two-storey townhouses with private jetties overlooking the canal.

To increase the level of street-front activation, each property has two balconies, one facing the street and one facing the canal, says Cedar Woods' development manager Ken Haustead. The other key architectural feature is the partially covered central courtyard adjoining the living areas and surrounded by full-height glass.

"The courtyards bring large amounts of natural light into the home, provide a private space sheltered from the elements, and enhance the natural flow of air through the homes," says Haustead.

The homes are fully insulated and solar glazed for energy efficiency. Other facilities include a remote monitored alarm system, reverse cycle air conditioning and panel lift garage doors.

In the seaside town of Rockingham, Cedar Woods has developed two apartment projects for a new market of weekenders and locals, says Starr.

"Historically, Rockingham has been a sleepy holiday destination; now it is an outlying suburb of Perth. We chose to be pioneers in the area, developing Aria and now Nautilus."

The Nautilus apartments incorporate one, two or three bedroom layouts, with six penthouse-style apartments on the eighth floor. Each kitchen is fitted with Bosch appliances, and incorporates either a granite or composite stone benchtop.
