Warm and white
White rooms do not have to be stark: here, colour and texture have been added to create a comfortable, dedicated laundry
Traditionally, the laundry is one of those rooms that we avoid spending too much time in, especially if it's tucked away in a dark basement. But with enough space for storage, and for sorting and folding clothes, a laundry can be a pleasure to work in even more so when the room is light and airy.
The dedicated laundry featured here was designed by Cheryl Moynagh, as part of the renovation of a period villa. The villa retains its traditional white weatherboard facade, while the rear of the home has been extended and reconfigured as a contemporary, open-plan living space.

The laundry on the ground floor, which is accessed from the family bathroom, follows the same contemporary design and colour palette as the rest of the renovated house. Warm grey floor tiles accentuate the crisp white of the cabinetry, walls and appliances.
Functionality was also a priority. A retractable ironing board, positioned with room to manoeuvre around it, and a retractable drying rail both increase the useable work space. Floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry provides plenty of storage space for linen, while long benchtops and wickerwork baskets allow clothes to be sorted easily. The baskets also soften the minimalist lines of the appliances and cabinetry.
