Touching good looks

Soft-to-the-touch, fingerprint-resistant Italian laminate panels conceal a wealth of functionality in this stand-out kitchen by the sea

Designed by Madeleine Sloback, Madeleine Design Group

From the designer:

This kitchen in a Vancouver-area ocean front home is part of a large-scale renovation and redesign.

Some materials used here make repeated appearances throughout the house, tying this room into the overall design concept.

An open plan and high-end appliances contribute to the individualistic, custom designed kitchen.

The left wall of the kitchen houses the refrigerator, freezer, wine fridge, and a hidden door to a prep kitchen. This second cooking area is complete with all appliances and more benchspace than most people’s main kitchen and hides behind a door so the cooking can be undertaken out of sight from guests.

The door and appliances are hidden behind soft-to-the-touch, fingerprint-resistant Italian laminate panels in a black matte finish, while Italian marble covers the backsplash wall.

The kitchen is equipped with three ovens and a 48-inch cooktop range; all appliances are Sub-Zero and Wolf.

Cabinets in both the prep and main kitchens are by Richmond-based Nickels Cabinets.

The kitchen island has an impressive 1.2m wide galley sink and adequate seating for a small gathering.

The Italian marble here is coated with a sealer so it doesn’t stain or etch over time.

The kitchen floor is the same European white oak that runs throughout the home. The lighter floor colour helps the Crescent and recessed LED lighting above illuminate the kitchen.

A noteworthy piece of furniture is the custom-made credenza that provides a boundary for the dining and kitchen spaces.

This is a completely original piece, fully conceived and designed by Madeleine and fabricated by millworker Kurt Sander.

Split into two portions, the reeded black walnut side is centred with the dining room table, while the off-set glass portion showcases a lifetime of trinkets and collectibles.

Two final areas to highlight, both adjacent to the main kitchen: in the hallway, just before you reach the kitchen, lives a full self-serve coffee bar. This includes a built-in coffee machine, sink and faucet with instant hot water for tea, microwave, fridge drawer and storage.

A small wine room is located in an alcove behind the refrigerator wall. Nero Marquina marble is used on the floor, counter, and backsplash.

The right wall houses a collection of wine bottles on pegs, while the left wall is textured split-face marble, repeating a design style from the kitchen-adjacent family room’s fireplace wall.
