Taming the landscape

I wanted to embrace the textures and colours of the landscape – which is very much is part of this kitchen space – rather than competing with them.

The earthy colour palette and the textures of the light hitting the many different plains of the surrounding landscape inspired me to select a combination of a dark stained timber veneer, dark lacquered cabinetry and copper features.

I fell in love with the Dekton Laurent and decided to use this as a central feature for the island benchtop, the movement of the veining in the stone is reminiscent of the movement and textures in the landscape.

I wanted to use copper to add warmth and texture to the kitchen so I clashed the Dekton benchtop with copper. 

The curved ends of the island speak to the curved walls used through the design of the house. 

I designed lacquered vertical slats to curve around the island ends and alternated these with vertical strips of copper. 

I added small LED downlights every second vertical copper space to wash the copper with light.

The manufacture of the hammered copper rangehood shroud was a challenge due to its size, the sloped ceiling and the work involved. 

I am so happy with the organic, textured finish and the sculptural element it provides the kitchen. 

Rather than competing with the view, it sits well in the space. 

The shroud contains the integrated rangehood and has a beautifully finished oak panel with LED strip lighting to provide functional light and a decorative element.

For the sink cabinetry and pantry benchtops, I have used Dekton Radium to provide a functional contrast to the Laurent and to visually disappear.

We have used integrated appliances throughout the kitchen. 

On the back wall we have an integrated Sub Zero fridge/freezer and 'hidden' doors into the pantry and hallway. 

For these doors, we have used the same stained timber veneer as for the cabinetry, bulkhead and interior wall cladding. 

This created a streamlined backdrop for the feature island and the sculptural rangehood, allowing these to become the focal point.
