Transparency is key to the upgrade of Queenstown Airport, allowing the natural environment to come to the fore
There are situations when aesthetics traditionally take a back seat to functionality airport design is usually one of them. However, when the setting is as dramatic as that of Queenstown Airport, aesthetics become just as important.
The upgrade to Queenstown Airport presented the opportunity to design a building that played on the strength of its location, as well as providing a facility that sets the benchmark for accessibility, says John Rogers, director of Wellington-based architectural firm Craig Craig Moller.
"Transparency is key with Queenstown Airport from the moment you drive up to the terminal and cross the forecourt you can see right through the building to the aircraft beyond. The retail and cafe areas look out over the runway towards Coronet Peak in the near distance."
"The internal spaces are free-flowing and the layout is very readily understood, without reliance on way-finding signage. The plan allows for logical expansion in the future, to cater for ever growing passenger numbers and changing airline requirements.
"Great attention was paid to acoustics within the terminal, and to creating an environment that is stable and energy efficient," says Rogers.
Craig Craig Moller was assisted by Baker Garden Architects from Dunedin in the execution of this project.
