Its clever wraparound design and central location makes this kitchen, and those using it, the centre of attention

Designing a kitchen within a small space demands careful consideration. Aspects such as layout, storage and workspace must be well planned to make the most of the area available. But limited space doesn't mean creativity or options need also be restricted.

Such space and budgetary constraints certainly didn't deter Mark Cashman from Marsh Cashman Koolloos Architects when he was commissioned to renovate this California bungalow.

Cashman recommended demolishing a series of lean-tos at the rear of the house to make way for a new extension that would contain the living room, kitchen and dining room, and open onto outdoor living spaces at both ends.

"With the owners limited budget, we needed to keep the design simple," says Cashman. "They wanted a casual, open space containing the kitchen, and a dining and living area."

Another request from the owners was for something a little unusual. So, rather than opting for the ubiquitous island benchtop, the architect designed a central block with the kitchen area defined by two half-height, orange-painted walls.

This compact design allows those using the kitchen to socialise with guests while preparing meals, yet it means any mess can be kept hidden.

This compact central block houses the sink, freestanding cooker and dishwasher in two parallel workspaces that feature stainless steel benchtops and splashbacks. A custom-made stainless steel rangehood is built into the roof structure above.

"The use of stainless steel gives the kitchen a commercial feel and reflects the owner's involvement in the catering industry," says Cashman.

To one side of the kitchen block, a large bank of cabinetry runs the length of the space. It contains the pantry, an integrated fridge and microwave, and storage for crockery.
