Style and substance

The roof of your home has a much broader role than simply providing shelter it also helps determine the style and character of your home

Just as architectural styles change to reflect current trends, so do building materials need to keep pace. Recently, there has been an increasing demand for roof tiles with a flat profile.

To meet this need, Boral Roofing has released the Flat Concrete roof tile collection a range reminiscent of slate shingles.

Rob and Christie Buckingham of Beaumaris, Melbourne, specified this range for their new home, designed by Graham Jones Design. The Flat Concrete roof tiles fitted their requirement for a contemporary home that would go the distance.

"We wanted the roof to be thoroughly modern, while at the same time transcending some modern associations," says Christie Buckingham. "A key priority was the use of a material of substance to reflect and enhance the integrity of the rest of the house. We wanted roof tiles that combined the aesthetic appeal of slate with unreserved strength and durability."

Buckingham says Boral's Flat Concrete Striata roof tiles met this brief.

Flat Concrete roof tiles are available in an extensive colour range, and two different finishes the distinctive, textured Striata range shown here, and the smooth, clean-cut Linea tiles.

Brett Sargeant, divisional general manager of Boral Roofing, says the collection delivers the flat, clean appearance now in demand for both metropolitan and rural house styles.

"Design features, such as extended eaves are also in favour, thanks to the increased awareness of sustainable building practices," he says. These have a big impact on the temperature of a home and the comfort of its occupants. For these designs, it's a case of less is more, which is where a flat profile roof tile really steps up to the mark."

To accompany the Flat Concrete roof tile range, Boral Roofing has developed an innovative ridge capping system for an even sleeker finish. The patented CSIRO-tested Seamless Ridge Capping System is colour-matched and consists of individual low-profile capping pieces for each course of roof tiles.

Sargeant says the Flat Concrete roof tiles replace the Grange collection. All Boral roof tiles are salt-safe and resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for coastal locations. They also come with a 50-year guarantee.
