We all know the feeling it comes halfway through the film when the popcorn is gone, your posterior numbs and the fidgeting begins. But with custom-made seats comfortable viewing is guaranteed. Add in your own popcorn machine and you create a better-than-cinema experience in your own home.

However, there is a perceived risk when relaxing in a red suede, custom-made, 80° recliner with footrest says Martyn Thompson, owner of this home cinema you may nod off before the film is finished.

"This cinema is purpose built from the ground up. I wanted to re-create the feel of the theatres I grew up in during the 1970s and 80s, but with supreme comfort," he says.

There's no danger of napping in this wired-for-sound haven though, as Thompson had a Marantz 7.1 surround-sound system installed.

"I wanted to provide a unique, realistic and mind-blowing experience that none of my friends have got."

Currently running a THX-certified amplifier, the only thing you may be at risk of doing in this cinema is physically ducking from on-screen explosions, projectiles and other such aural delights.

High density batts, together with a special wall and roof structure mounted on rubber grommets, further maximise sound quality by minimising reverberations and echo.

Adding to this ultra-realistic experience are the 110-inch stationary screen with fixed picture frame and ceiling-mounted Infocus DLP projector.

"This set-up delivers better image quality than you would experience with a cinema, TV or plasma. It gives a crisp and clean picture with excellent colour definition."

Thompson says it was challenging to work underground without natural light in this minimalist designed space.

"It took one year to plan and two years to build, and required extensive waterproofing."
