Smart meets art
Interwoven with layers of functional and decorative art, Waitakere Central showcases the latest sustainable building techniques
Continuing the theme of sustainability into the civic centre's interior, renewable materials were selected as a first preference, but not however at the expense of visual appeal.
An example of the aesthetic qualities of these materials can be seen in the selection of Hoop Pine AC White Interior panels supplied by Decortech. These acoustic plywood ceiling panels were used throughout the chamber, chamber hall and meeting rooms. The material was also used for wall panelling on levels two through five, says Jack van der Linden, Decortech's general manager.
"Our products are manufactured exclusively from timbers sourced from sustainable forests. Hoop Pine AC is a fine, even-grained plywood. During the project we worked closely with Architectus to custom design the panels and ensure the highest possible standard of finishes," he says.
The finished panels feature slotted perforations to enhance the acoustic insulation. They were also treated for fire resistance.
While AC grade plywood is suited to ceiling and wall panels, Decortech also offer AA-grade hoop pine, which is suitable for double-sided applications, such as screens and partitions, or where the exposed edge is featured. In addition, the company provides a range of other substrates and a wide range of perforation options.
