Open floor plans that create free-flowing interiors are the norm rather than the exception today. But it can be practical and enjoyable to also have a smaller space away from the noisy hub of the home.

Architect Scott Gilbride, who designed this house with interior designer Kirsti Wolfe, is a firm believer in the value of such spaces, and the calming influence they exert. For this project, he positioned a small library next to the main living spaces, with two sets of pocket sliders.

"When the large pocket doors are open, the library becomes an adjunct space for the main living areas, without any visual pause," he says. "There is space to walk around a double-sided fireplace between the two rooms the fireplace becomes the hub of a much larger space. There is also an immediate connection with the main entry hall and the service hall."

When the large pocket doors are partially or completely closed, the spaces change dramatically. A desk area beneath the windows becomes a hallway, allowing the owners to bypass the library as they come and go to the master suite.

"The library itself becomes a much more intimate space, but there is still plenty of natural light from a large skylight," says Gilbride.

Corner pocket doors add a touch of drama. The doors are not always obvious at first glance one seems to disappear into the fireplace, while the other door slides across a bed alcove to vanish into the wall. This door can enclose the bed alcove, providing privacy for anyone wanting a daytime nap.

The library can also become an extra guest bedroom with the main doors closed. The corner doors form the entry and provide access to a powder room that has been equipped with a shower, effectively creating a private suite.
