Sized to suit

If you enjoy cooking, you're likely to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so it's important that it is easy to use, with appliances and cabinetry conveniently located, and countertops at the most comfortable height for you.

Jeff Cannata, CMKBD, of Designer's Showcase Kitchens & Baths, Inc was asked to design a kitchen for the owners of the home featured here. The primary cook, who loves to cook for and entertain large groups of family and friends, wanted to create a preparation space to accommodate her height so she asked Cannata to take this into account in his design.

"We decided to create countertops at three different levels, which ensures the new kitchen is extremely functional, not only for the main cook in the family, but also for others using the kitchen," says the designer.

To achieve this, the design includes a breakfast bar, a preparation area at standard height and a second countertop adjoining it, but a couple of inches lower.

The owners also wanted the kitchen to complement the style of the rest of their house. Cannata chose Jay Rambo Custom Cabinetry in a Clear Alderwood species with Brownstone finish for the perimeter cabinetry and Vintage red finish for the island and hutch cabinetry. Cambria Lancaster countertops, top-of-the-line Viking appliances and a Kohler undermounted farm sink in a biscuit color complete the look.
