Signature looks
Hand-painted tile murals provide a distinctive starting point for a room's new look
Every room benefits from a strong focal point, especially one that provides inspiration for the color choices and design themes in the room.
One option is to commission a tile mural a traditional art form that has been used to decorate homes and public spaces throughout the Mediterranean region for centuries.
Linda Denmark, whose company Porto de Mos imports hand-painted tile murals from Portugal, says homeowners and architects are choosing them for contemporary kitchens and bathrooms, as well as for more traditional or formal settings.
"The murals work across a range of different looks," she says. "They can be used for kitchen backsplashes, living room mantles, outside walls even for house numbers or names."
Many of the murals feature patterns and colors that are used in Portugal to this day, such as the signature blue and white floral designs. The murals depict landscapes, seascapes, rural scenes, medieval and religious themes, and even the owners' photos.
Each tile is hand painted, fired using the traditional majolica process, and signed by the artist. Three layers of protective clear varnish are then applied, which allows the tiles to be used in kitchens and bathrooms.
