To ensure a lasting seal around your shower, bathtub and sink, check out these tips for using Selleys Wet Area Silicone

Bathrooms are one of the wettest areas in a house. Moisture needs to be carefully contained, especially around bathtubs, sinks and showers. Choosing the right materials to seal off these fixtures can make all the difference.

Selleys has developed a number of products designed for bathrooms, says the company's marketing director Warwick Rounce. These include Selleys Silicone sealants.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about how to obtain the best results from Selleys Silicone Sealants.

How do I prevent mould from growing underneath and around the silicone? Mould will not grow on silicone, but can develop if the area is damp and has soap scum or residue on it. To reduce this problem, select a silicone sealant that contains mould repellent and is highly adhesive in both wet and dry conditions, such as Selleys Wet Area Silicone Sealant.

How do I ensure the silicone sealant remains effective against water leakage? When youapply a silicone sealant, follow three important steps. Firstly, make sure the surface is clean by wiping it with mineral turpentine and allow it to fully dry. Secondly, apply the silicone by pushing it ahead with the caulking gun, ensuring it is forced into the joint. Thirdly, make sure the silicone sealant has completely dried before exposure to water.

How do I get a neat and smooth finish? To keep your lines neat and straight, mask the surrounding surfaces with masking tape. Immediately run a spatula or teaspoon along the silicone sealant bead, then remove the tape, which will take any excess away with it.

Should I apply the silicone sealant around the bathtub or vanity before or after I paint? As paint will not adhere to most silicone sealants, paint the surface first and apply the silicone last.

How do I get rid of unwanted silicone? If you have made a mistake or want to remove old silicone, first cut back as much of the unwanted material as possible. Then apply Selleys Silicone Remover and allow to sit for at least two hours. At that point, you will easily be able to scrape or wipe away, leaving a clean surface.
