Sense of theater
Multi-paned window walls feature throughout this designer's home, and flood the interior with natural light
Just as food always looks best on a white plate, so does a white backdrop enhance a gourmet cook's kitchen. And when natural light is allowed to permeate the space, the materials and textures are highlighted. That was the premise that designer Jamie Herzlinger used as the basis for the design of her own kitchen.
The designer also looked to ancient Rome and Greece for her inspiration in particular, the white marble that has endured for centuries.
"Contrary to what some people may think, sealed marble wears beautifully," she says. "The Calacatta Gold slabs in this kitchen have an opaque quality that makes the veining stand out."

For added dramatic effect, Herzlinger created an extra-high backsplash, which is the same height as a bank of walnut cabinets. These are finished in a bittersweet stain that has a slightly yellow hue to complement the marble. A 13ft-long island enhances the visual impact, and helps provide separation for the cook when entertaining.
"All the major appliances are positioned at one end of the kitchen, which leaves the other end free for guests," says Herzlinger. "Yet there is still room for more than one person to work in the kitchen at a time. This is made easier by having a sink and dishwasher within the island as well as in the perimeter cabinetry. The refrigerator drawers in the island are also invaluable."
Brushed stainless steel toekicks make the island appear to float within the space, shining in the sunlight and visually lightening the heavy appearance of the walnut.
An intimate breakfast area features laminate wall paneling with custom wood shelving to display photos and collectibles.
"The addition of a sofa makes for a touch of romance," says Herzlinger. "Similarly, with the formal dining area, I like to create a stage set there is a definite theater aspect to the design. This is reinforced by the transparent acrylic chairs, the silver leaf ceiling panel and the chandelier."
