Structural integrity is paramount to building safety
At the heart of any building construction is the ongoing safety of those who will be using the building upon its completion. In most instances the local council acts as certifying authority.
However, for the purposes of good corporate governance and the avoidance of any suggestion of conflict of interest, the City of Sydney as the regulatory body decided to appoint an independent and separate authority as the principal certifying authority for the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre.
As a consequence, Dix Gardner was appointed to issue all building approvals, undertake building inspections, and for the subsequent issue of occupation approvals for the centre.
Dix Gardner principal Lyall Dix says working on the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre was one of the more interesting projects the company has undertaken.
"The design of the centre made this a particularly exciting and challenging project. The architects, Harry Seidler and Associates, are renowned for their innovative buildings, and a lot of the enjoyment derived was from balancing architectural innovation with public health and safety."
Dix Gardner is one of New South Wales' largest building certification practices, approving $1.32b of building work in the last calendar year.
