Regal bathroom by Iris Dankner
Refined, lustrous space by Iris Dankner
Once upon a time, the bathroom was a space of simple utility, unloved and scarcely thought about. However, this Cinderella-like room has come into its own even going to the other extreme, a noble retreat fit for a queen.
This refined master bathroom forms part of a whole-house remodel by interior designer Iris Dankner. The original bathroom occupied a similar footprint but had underwhelmed with poor connections, tired, cracked porcelain and a toilet that lacked privacy, says Dankner.
"In its place, the owners wanted a look of pure glamour and I approached this in several ways. In terms of the layout, we opened up the connection from the dressing room to the master bathroom with French doors and introduced similar doors within the bathroom, for a more generous opening to an outdoor terrace," says Dankner. "We also created a niche within the wall of the bathroom for the toilet, which gave enough privacy for both owners to use the bathroom at the same time."

The designer says she wanted to strengthen the connection between the dressing room and bathroom, so besides enhancing the doorway, she created the dresser in one room and the vanity in the other in Jacobean hardwood with a dark Java stain and transitional panel style.
"The rich surface connects with the wood floor in the dressing room and at the same time contrasts the pale walls, floor and ceiling in the bathroom all of which play a substantial part in achieving the room's glamorous appeal."
Above the dado rail, the walls are finished in Venetian plaster, with its distinctive speckled glaze, and below this, finished in Crema Marfil marble tile. The ceiling has a high gloss finish to catch light and reflections and there are many.
"The flooring is also in pale Crema Marfil, but is all the more regal with mother-of-pearl accent tiles that catch the light," says Dankner.
To optimize a feeling of space in the already generously sized bathroom, Dankner selected a freestanding tub and set a customized antique mirror behind it. This mirror is decorated with tiny rosebuds in another refined touch.
"Lighting is the suite's crowning glory the antique chandelier and crystal luminaire in the dressing room complete the sparkling decor."
