Working up a sweat is par for the course when you visit a gym, but a high-performance air conditioning system can make a big difference to your comfort and health. The new Les Mills gymnasium needed a system that would not only cope with rooms of various sizes and continually varying heat loads, but would also deliver significant energy savings.

The Australian Air-Change system meets these demands. Sales manager Bruce Grant says Air-Change has developed a high-efficiency, counter-flow, air-to-air heat exchanger to precondition the outdoor air in winter and summer. This can result in energy savings of up to 80%, and a payback on investment of less than 12 months.

"Variable speed drives on the supply and exhaust fans deliver additional energy savings."

Grant says Air-change is widely recognised for its highly efficient air conditioning of gymnasiums, swimming pools, hospitals and commercial buildings, with installations throughout New Zealand.

"The Les Mills gym features seven Air-Change reverse cycle rooftop units one for each of the seven areas within the complex. The technological advances incorporated in the Air-Change system ensure there is a high air quality in all areas of the gym. This means patrons can enjoy oxygen-rich outside air at all times as much as 100% if necessary.

The Air-Change systems also eliminate stale air and airborne contaminants, such as smoke, fungal spores and dust, without the danger of cross contamination of air paths through the exchanger.

The system for the gym was designed by Cosgroves and installed by AMT Mechanical. Grant says the commissioning was virtually fault free, and all seven units are performing precisely as expected.
