In this way, the natural features of finishes such as marble, and even the surrounding environment, can be appreciated. The kitchen of the villa featured on these pages previously looked onto the garden, but the new owners, who have young children, also wanted a better connection with adjacent rooms. One change made by kitchen designer Celia Visser was to reorient the island by 90 degrees, so the kitchen flowed into both the garden and the dining and formal lounge areas. Colours were selected from the Resene range "The kitchen is the main focus of this space, so anyone working in the kitchen can now connect with the whole family and take part in or observe activities inside the house," says Visser. The owners collect art and modern design pieces and the kitchen provides a simple backdrop as well as allowing them to entertain easily. White lacquered cabinetry, wide drawers, lift-up overhead cabinets and whitewashed floorboards create a contemporary look. A white-tiled splashback in a quilted pattern adds texture, while the white marble benchtop streaked with grey constitutes an artistic element of its own."The flash of grey ties in with the stainless steel legs on the island and makes a connection with the appliances, sink, handles and benchtop at the back of the kitchen," says the designer.
