The challenge to create a more sustainable lifestyle is being embraced and pioneered not only in New Zealand's cities, but in its provincial centres as well. Taupo District Council has recognised the need for a more holistic planning and economic development approach to community design.

To that end, the council has employed urban design and masterplanning specialists Common Ground Urban Design and multidisciplinary consultancy firm Cheal Consultants to devise a master plan for a 180ha parcel of land on the outskirts of Taupo, says Common Ground principal James Lunday.

"Common Ground, Cheal and the council have committed to transform the site into the country's first sustainable garden suburb. The site comprises several ancient volcanic stream beds that have naturally divided it into what will be a number of compact neighbourhoods. A distinct identity has been given to each neighbourhood, which will feature residential, commercial and retail centres interspersed with open space and natural and groomed parkland. The emphasis is on sustainability and community many of the lessons learnt at Tauhara Ridge are now being assimilated into other developments around New Zealand."
