Revamped take on 1980s glam – congratulations to Jack Fugaro Architect, winner of the 2026 TIDA Australia Architect Suite of the Year
This transformation of a 1980s Melbourne home draws inspiration from the glamour of that bygone era, pairing it with a refined material palette and sophisticated contemporary detailing.
Originally, the master suite's main rooms were completely separate spaces, constrained by small door openings and lacking natural light and ventilation.
The revamped floor plan removes a bedroom wall, flips the position of the bed and adds a small robe behind it,
Meanwhile the two existing separate wardrobes were combined into a single, cohesive dressing space.
Drawing from the original bathtub's elevated position, the design extends this concept to create the sense of entering a dedicated bathhouse.
A freestanding bathtub occupies the hero position in this zone, balanced by a generous shower space designed to enhance the daily ritual.
Above the bath, the original diamond coffered ceiling was carefully retained and highlighted with concealed perimeter lighting.
Similar architectural ceiling details can be seen repeated above the bed and the central island in the dressing room.
While the bathhouse area includes a convenient dressing table, the main vanity was installed adjacent to the bedroom and dressing room, providing easy access without the need to navigate the steps to the elevated bathhouse.
The TIDA judges were impressed by how the architect stripped out dated aspects of the 1980s design, choosing instead to refine selected features to create a distinctive and secluded private retreat.
