Peaceful panorama
Relaxing in a bath with a view can be bliss. The luxurious, serene environment in this master bathroom makes the experience even better
Closing your eyes and sinking into a warm, relaxing bath is one of life's small pleasures. The owners of this bathroom know that when they open their eyes, they'll be able to enjoy yet another pleasure a wonderful view.
With few privacy issues to consider, designer Mimmi Freebody of Mmm Bathroom Design, decided to maximise the vista from this upstairs master bathroom.
"We made the window larger and lowered it, then placed the contoured, heavy-gauge steel bath beneath it," she says. "By sinking the bath slightly into the floor, the surround appears less boxlike and dominant in the space. It also means that you can look out and enjoy the view while soaking."
To create a peaceful, relaxing environment, Freebody chose a palette of natural materials in subtle tones.
Walnut travertine tiles, carried through from the rest of the house, are used on the floor and bath surround. Paler limestone on the walls gives a feeling of spaciousness, while a strip of walnut tiles adds interest to the wall at the head of the bath.
Freebody custom designed the stained-oak bathroom furniture, which includes a tall, floor-to-ceiling unit for towel storage. On the opposite wall, a display unit with vertical sliding, frosted-glass panels acts as a divider between the two vanities.
Raised off the ground on stainless steel legs, each vanity features a two-drawer unit between horizontal slabs of porcelain. The imported Spanish Moon basins are each made from a solid piece of marble. They are enhanced by minimalist tapware.
