The owners of this residence, a retired couple, have recently completed a renovation for more space. Ironic, don’t you think? Not necessarily – with three children and nine grandkids who visit frequently.

Come Monday morning and the first wave of grandchildren, two and four-year old girls, arrive at nana and poppas for a full day of grand-parenting love and care. As the week progresses school pickups are made and it’s the teenage grandchildren‘s turn to spend quality time with their grandparents while mum and dad are at work.

The refurbishment was the addition of an outdoor room to make more space, improve indoor-outdoor flow from the lounge and kitchen area, through to the outdoor room and out to the back yard. “We really wanted to open up the home to the outdoors as the grandkids always seem to gravitate to the backyard which had previously been inaccessible from our lounge and kitchen”.

The creation of an outdoor room ensured more than enough space for the couple, who regularly look after their nine grandchildren.

The outdoor room had to be functional year round; be adaptable and comfortable for an array of family and friends day or night; and be adjustable to accommodate New Zealand’s weather. Adding the outdoor room off the main lounge meant it would connect the two spaces and create indoor-outdoor flow to the back yard.

The project commenced with the installation of a large deck with stairs leading on to the back lawn. Then for the outdoor room, two motorised Opening Roofs with walls taking the form of hand-adjustable sun louvre panels and frameless sliding glass doors.  Finishing touches included Louvretec downlights, louvre blade lighting and infrared radiant outdoor heaters mounted to the underside of the Opening Roof frame. The result is a timeless design with a modern twist.

The new outdoor room has quickly become the family’s new favourite room and is now the nominated gathering space to house alfresco family gatherings  – whatever the weather.

I love how I can open up my home and enjoy the weather or alternatively close the louvres, turn on the outdoor heaters & create a comfortable haven or even provide shade when required.
