To create a strong link with family living areas, this U-shaped kitchen wraps around three freestanding walls
When a Chicago couple decided to remodel their 1950s ranch house, a new kitchen was at the top of their list. So, too, was a new family living area, which needed to have a close connection with the kitchen.
Designer Lisa Murphy, of DDK Kitchen Design Group, says both spaces are part of a new addition, which also includes an open curved staircase to the basement, and a back hallway to the bedrooms.
"The remodeling project provided several key architectural features, including tall, soaring ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, a full-height fireplace wall and curved walls," Murphy says. "The owners wanted the kitchen to be equally interesting, but at the same time, not overwhelm the whole area."
The solution was to create a wide, U-shaped kitchen, enclosed by freestanding walls, with a functional center island facing the open family room. Light maple wood cabinetry and clean, contemporary door styles were specified.
"To enhance the open feel, we chose not to cover all the walls with cabinetry," says Murphy. "Consequently, all three walls also feature slate tile."
The cooking center, which has a large stainless steel backsplash, is positioned on the rear wall. Maple cabinets on either side of the hood are stacked into a series of cubes to create a floating effect. Cubed wall cabinets are also a feature of the side walls.
"The varied heights and shapes of the cabinetry and the stainless steel appliances add interest to both walls," says Murphy.
The granite-topped island contains a large snack bar and the main sink, which is positioned so the owner can face the family room.
Murphy says the kitchen features Decora semi-custom cabinets, designed to look like a high-end custom-manufactured kitchen.
"The skills of our carpenters allow our designers to push the creative envelope and include more detail in the cabinetry design, which in turn gives customers more value for their money."
