All-day sun and a sheltered position are usually prerequisites for a pool, but they can seem impossible to achieve on a steep site.An unusual solution was found for the house featured on these pages architect Ed Eames designed a suspended pool that's effectively an extension of the second level of the three-storey house."Sliding doors open up the entire house to the sunny terraces and wonderful river views," says Eames. "It's a seamless transition between indoors and out an effect heightened by the position of the pool, which is virtually the same level as the terrace." Close view of the garden Eames says the infinity edge to the pool makes the water appear to merge with the river beyond. Blue glass mosaic tiles heighten the effect and add to the shimmer of the pool as the water laps beside the window of the master bedroom. The use of similar Italian limestone tiles both inside and out, enhances the seamless flow. The exterior tiles have a matt finish to provide an anti-slip finish. To create an alternative outdoor living area, land was excavated on the south side of the house. The steepness of the site was moderated by terracing the highest wall with narrow gardens. These feature a variety of plants, including Agave attenuata, Bird of Paradise and bougainvillea. View of the outdoor living area Eames says the terracing and lush planting help to soften the structural impact of the wall. Cushions also add a casual, comfortable look to the built-in seating areas."This part of the garden is a private and contemplative court for the owners, a more traditional space, which is overlooked by a study in the house," he says.A water feature also helps to relieve the structured nature of the landscape.
