In a variable climate that can include heavysnowfall, preventing water and moisture entry when a home is built is essential. However, when the roof is also a major design element, it is important that it serves the aesthetic of the style as well.On this project, Constructions Collaborative Inc, (CCI), played a multifaceted role. The company was responsible for the fabrication and installation of architectural sheetmetal flashing and roofing, as well as the installation of slate roofing, structural skylights and low slope EPDM roofing, says company president Clark Chase."The design objective was to provide a long-lived, functional roof that would aesthetically serve as a major design element in its own right."Mottled purple and green Vermont slate was chosen as the primary roofing material after the client had seen a similar roof on another house. "To allow us to play with texture, and to reduce the home's overall perceived mass, heavier slate than normal was harvested," says architect Tom Catalano.Chosen for durability as well as visual appeal, the slate three to four times thicker than average slate was a challenge to work with, says Chase."To be installed correctly, the slate needed to be contoured to the very complex roof planes. It also required an exacting commitment to proper material layout and installation," he says.Other materials were also selected for both functionality and visual appeal durable, lead coated copper sheetmetal that can be easily painted, and custom made, lead-coated snowguards. Snowguards are essential during winter to protect the exterior living spaces and the extensive landscaping around the home's perimeter. To maintain the home's clean lines, all visible mechanical systems and other functional elements, such as guttering, were obscured with creative finish details. As a final touch, a gilt weather vane in the form of a mythical griffin was incorporated. For further roofing information, contact Constructions Collaborative, 99 Hammond St, Waltham, MA 02451, phone (781) 891 6757, fax (781) 891 4527.
