Neoclassical charm
With its strong sense of symmetry, solid materials and enveloping architecture, this home by Starr Constructions provides a welcoming entry and the wow factor
Architecture is just as subject to the whims of fashion as any other design discipline, which was one of the key reasons the owners of this new house requested a neoclassical design that would not date.
Jon Vithoulka, a director of Starr Constructions, the company that built the three-storey home, says that as well as having a strong visual presence, the house needed to feature permanent materials, and it had to be cool in summer and warm in winter.
"To meet this brief, the house is built from solid brick, with glazing on the side of the house facing a spectacular view of Canada Bay and Sydney city. From the front, it is not unlike a traditional European mansion the symmetrical wings wrap the entry to provide a warm welcome.
"But the wow factor is also there. As soon as you walk inside, the house opens up to a large entry and a curving staircase with wrought iron balustrading a material that features on the gates and throughout the interior."
Continuity is also provided by the flowing, open-plan layout and the crisp, clean-lined detailing.
Other key features of the four-bedroom house include a basement pool and bar, and large, galley-style kitchen.
