Just as we rush to enjoy the warmth of the sun on holiday, it seems we're naturally attracted to a glowing fire in our homes. It's this attraction, coupled with the popularity of contemporary styles, that has prompted a shift in gas fire design, according to Nigel Bamford, managing director of Escea.

"We are seeing a trend in new homes away from complex, highly decorative mantles and fireplaces towards simple and clean designs that position the flame as the dominant feature," he says. "A gas fire provides the focal point in the room to centre the furniture around, and creates an ambience that only a flame can provide."

We're also keen to use technology to make our lives easier, says Bamford.Owners of an Escea gas fire can use an optional i-con accessory, which allows users to control their fire from a cell phone, landline or the internet.

"When you're driving home from work, and it's freezing cold and pouring with rain, you can use your cell phone to turn on your gas fire by the time you get home, the whole house is a cosy 20°C."

The i-con is convenient for owners of holiday homes, says Bamford, because the homeowner can walk into a warm home even if the house has been unoccupied for weeks.
