Mysterious utility
Clean lines and sleek surfaces draw attention to light, form and space, bringing an element of mystery to this kitchen
For many people, a clean, uncluttered kitchen is a tantalising ideal that remains just out of reach, in spite of all their efforts to achieve it. The kitchen on these pages goes beyond this everyday desire into a realm where sleek and streamlined fittings are appreciated as objects, before their underlying utility is detected.
Designed by Grahame Boyd to replace a more conventional kitchen in his own home, the space now shares the minimalist aesthetic of the rest of the house.

"I wanted to integrate the kitchen with the living and dining areas by making the joinery itself the focus of attention. That made it necessary to use materials of similar quality and finish," says Boyd.
A long, black lacquered cabinet features three low slot lights which illuminate the dining area when required. Positioned to conceal activity and appliances behind it, the cabinet has a service duct under the counter which carries plumbing and electrics into the tall maple cupboard by the wall.
The design takes advantage of the high stud, with a double bank of cabinets at the rear. Access to items stored up high is by a ladder, subtly invoking the idea of a library. A splashback of green glass contrasts with the white lacquer of the cabinetry.
