Moody and welcoming

This finely finished kitchen balances terra black surfaces with natural toned mosaics and the lustre of natural wood. Obstacles within the design were turned into positives.

From the designer:

Good design has transformed this kitchen, overcoming constraints with ease and introducing impeccable finishes for a modern comfortable workspace.

I worked with the owner to create a family kitchen conversion to reflect the strong, contemporary architectural building envelope and at the same time comprehensively meet the family needs.

I selected a palette which is bold, but includes subtle natural elements, creating a warm and inviting space.

Terra black finishes, including black interior cabinetry with highlights of walnut details for drawer inserts and accessories, has created a contrast of tone and textures with natural touches.

Negative detailed handles and electronic drawer closures give a sophisticated, sleek finish to the space along with the introduction of the highest quality fittings and appliances. The kitchen was designed to be a joy to work in for the homeowners.

Careful consideration was given to the narrow corner scullery in visual terms due to it being open to the kitchen and dining.

We also considered best placement in terms of access to dry good storage and small appliances.

The bulkhead was an existing feature that houses necessary mechanical ducts and this runs through into the scullery to form the lower ceiling.

The inclusion of well-designed elements overcoming these constraints together with careful attention to proportion makes the design look effortless and genuine.

The dining and bar unit also had constraints that I had to work with, specifically, a low window position which needed to consider the height of a workable surface.

The homeowners wished to include metal shelving into the design, so the selection of the palette and finishes helped to achieve this in a sophisticated way.

Warm tones of brass fittings and textured mosaic tiles also help to create a warm and inviting family kitchen with practicality and longevity of materials and finishes in mind.
