Forming part of a traditional villa, this stone-rich kitchen reflects the wider aesthetic in a pared back way – underpinned by contemporary functionality

Designed by Kirsten Basra, Spatial Studio

From the designer:

The brief for this historic villa's kitchen was to honour the traditional and historic elements of the home in a simplified way.

The owner loved the feeling of a white backdrop and requested a minimal stone block island.

Designed for a young family of four, the kitchen required two bar stools for the morning breakfast and afternoon homework.

We felt the cooking end of the kitchen was well suited to this requirement while still allowing us to have a stone block look for the island at the front of the kitchen – a perfect spot to view from while at the sink or prepping the evening dinners.

A practical stainless steel perimeter cooking surface reflects the Arabescato marble splashback, blurring the harsh line of the grey and the stone.

The side unit mimics a traditional crockery hutch unit but with closed off sliding doors and large drawers below for tall vases and alcohol bottles.

One side is designated for crockery and serving dishes while the other, right, side accommodates glassware and table setting items.

The family wanted maximum use of the dining table and requested that this be in close proximity to the kitchen.

A traditional take on what is now called a scullery acts as an open pantry for the owners.

They were used to this open style in the home from before it was extended and renovated so we aimed to achieve the same use in a slightly more practical way, with some closed cupboards below and larger open shelving units above.
