Open space is an essential part of the design of the Baywave Tect Aquatic and Leisure Centre, built as public facility for the Tauranga City Council. The interior had to accommodate five tiled concrete pools, including a wave pool and 25m lap pool with seating for international events, a hydro slide, a gym and a cafe.Jasmax design leader Ivan Mercep says the principal idea was to create a sense of openness and a wow factor when you first enter. A major milestone during the building was the completion of the two-section spine truss which supports the metal clad roof, says the construction manager for Mainzeal Property and Construction, Terry Murphy. To pick up the load, steel girders span out from the truss to precast, tapered concrete columns on the outside of the building. And to save more space, the water treatment and ventilation plants were built below ground level. Exterior view of aquatic and leisure centre with concrete columns, tiled cladding and landscaping.
