DUE TO THE close proximity of existing structures, building in the heart of a city requires special construction methods and practices by experienced contractors. For the Circle on Cavill project, a sheet piling, dewatering and filtration system was developed by Australian Sheet Piling.

Pat Buckley, Australian Sheet Piling manager, says the company installed its systems, which included sheet piling, anchoring, deep well dewatering and filtration, to the three levels of basement carpark.

"The sheet piling system we utilised is design protected and is produced and sold under license by Australian Sheet Piling," Buckley says. "The installation of the sheet piling is by a high frequency vibration system. Due to the compactness of the plant, mobilisation can be achieved on small building sites."

Buckley says each pile is of such rigidity and strength that it can be driven into the ground by high frequency vibration to a depth up to 14m. During excavation, ground anchors are progressively installed to restrain the sheet piling. This creates a reinforced earth zone behind the sheet piling to form a retaining wall structure around the excavation.
