A strategic renovation of a tired, closed off home by Buildology introduces an impressive entrance, sculptural stair and light-filled, flowing living spaces that open up to the dramatically transformed rooftop terrace

Renovation by Buildology Architectural Design

From the renovating architectural designer:

From the Prior to this transformation, the existing home had felt as if you were entering it through the rear of the building.

It had been closed in, dark and underwhelming.

The interior had been disconnected and closed off, forcing you to live towards the south end of the home instead of capturing the amazing views, sunshine and openness to the north.

Contemporary connection

Our design intent was to create a more open and inviting, double height entry void between the bedroom and living area wings.

The new connecting space would offer a modern transition from the current traditional architectural materiality.

Dark vertical lines and substantial joinery elongate the contemporary void.

Curvaceous welcome

As you enter the space you are greeted by elegantly curved stairs with contrasting dramatically textured finishes.

A large feature skylight is positioned high above the sitting nook near the top of the stairs – the abundance of natural light drawing you up the stairs and through the interior.

Spacious, light-filled living

The generous skylight creates a dynamic interplay of shadow and sunlight as well as visually opening the space to the sky above.

The large picture window frames the landscape beyond.

At its heart, the home embraces open-plan living with flowing spatial arrangements that foster a sense of seamless connection.

The central living areas are expansive and airy, defined by clean lines and flooded throughout with natural light.

Top of the world

The existing roof terrace had been grey and dated.

The metal balustrading was replaced with glazed panels to further enhance the sense of openness and allow for unobstructed views out over the pool and tennis court, while further inviting the light in.

The weathered tiles were replaced with decking to soften the space and elongate the internal flooring lines.

The formal living room opens out onto the roof terrace, connecting the spaces.

A new dark modern louvre structure frames the roof terrace acting as a transitional between the internal spaces and external landscape.

The sleek support structure provides unobstructed views of the cityscape and Rangitoto beyond.

Master bedroom – sunny with outlooks

Careful consideration was made to sure the master bedroom remained sunny while capturing the views of the city scape and landscape beyond.
