Port areas and waterfrontages have long been an integral part of the economic success of many cities. However, as the focus of business has changed over the years, many of these areas have become disused and councils now find themselves in a position of having to renew interest in them.

Wynyard Quarter is one such area that has recently been opened to the public, following a five-year revitalisation programme.

Property Council New Zealand chief executive Connal Townsend says Wynyard Quarter marks the start of a new life for Auckland's waterfront.

"After so many years with the focus solely on a commercial application, it is immensely satisfying to see these areas of Auckland's habourside being given over to the public. Ongoing plans will see much of the remaining ports being opened up over the next 20-30 years placing the inner-city waterfront firmly within the public focus."

John Dalzell, chief executive of Waterfront Auckland one of the key parties involved in the Wynyard Quarter redevelopment says the culmination of the past five years is testament to the willingness of all parties to produce a truly inclusive environment for residents of, and visitors to, the city.

"The delivery of Wynyard Quarter is the first tangible outcome for the waterfront plan, and it couldn't have turned out better.

"From the planning stages through to construction the focus has always been how to maximise the resource for the betterment of the population at large. We've used various overseas examples as case studies on how to achieve a successful outcome, while being mindful that it had to fit a New Zealand framework."
