It's for good reason that natural stone has been a popular building material for centuries. No other material possesses the varied textures, or the combinations of colour that make stone such a distinctive and visually interesting material.

However, a common misconception is that stone requires no maintenance, says Gabriel Chapman, brand manager for Dry-Treat, a world leader in the development of sealing products for porous building materials.

"Stone is porous a hard sponge with millions of capillaries that draw in liquids with dissolved salts and other materials that cause staining and even serious structural damage. Yet, if properly protected, stone is a hardy, easy-care material that breathes and ages, taking on additional character over the years.

"Dry-Treat sealers are different from old-fashioned topical sealers. Instead of a glossy artificial coating plastered over the surface, our sealers are invisible. They penetrate deeply into the material, bond inside the pores and repel liquids from inside."

Dry-Treat's sealers also have many advantages over other coatings.

"Besides not altering the look of your surface, Dry-Treat sealers protect against water, salt damage and oil-based stains. Other benefits include easier cleaning and reduction in moss growth, plus the surface retains its slip resistance when wet."

The pictured home's exterior entertainment area features a pool with a quartzite surround, and terraced areas with creamy travertine paving in a French pattern. The stone, from Amber Tiles, is sealed with Stain-Proof¢, by Dry-Treat.

Dry-Treat sealers are used around the globe in more than 30 countries. Projects range from high profile icons such as the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Cricket Ground to homes, public buildings, hotels and monuments. However, the sealers are also easily applied by homeowners. Stain-Proof, Dry-Treat's flagship sealer, comes with a 15-year warranty when applied by an accredited applicator.
