Lighting designed to be energy-efficient

WORKING CLOSELY with Clark Houltram of Beca and architect John van Cingel of Chow:Hill Architects, Infinity Lighting created a high-quality, energy-efficient and flexible lighting system.

For this, the company provided computer modelling assistance and supplied fluorescent modules, downlights, decorative hi-bays and a monitored emergency lighting system.

Director of Infinity Lighting Clark Nemeth says lighting had to be functional without being wasteful, and attractive without drawing attention away from the purpose of the library. Book shelves needed to have good vertical illumination, and allowance had to be made for shelving to be moved without changing the lighting arrangement.

"The brief included achieving an energy consumption of 11w/m² or better, and providing good levels of light on both horizontal and vertical planes, particularly in the evening when there is no daylight," he says.

During the day, electronic DSI ballasts dim the modules to maximise the energy savings, whilst at night the light wells that provide daylight to the central areas of the library are uplit. Trilux fittings, recessed into the floating timber panels on the ceiling, are a major architectural feature of the library.

To minimise energy usage, Infinity Lighting provided energy-efficient, long-life T5 fluorescent Trilux fixtures and low-glare louvres. These are used alongside T5 lamps that differ in wattage, depending on the respective mounting heights above the floor level. All Trilux recessed T5 modules are dimmable to work with the daylight sensors that are attached to the lighting control system.
