An open plan blurs the indoors with the outdoors for this kitchen in a house by the sea

A successful holiday home lets in plenty of sunshine, has wonderful views, a degree of privacy and the space and facilities to entertain family and friends with ease.
Builder Russell Campbell, of InHaus, had all these factors in mind when he built a bach on a sloping site near the ocean.
Following concept plans and consent drawings by architect Richard Sellars, the two-storey house was built into the hillside and oriented towards the sea. On either side of an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area is a terrace. Ranchsliders open the full length of each side, creating an almost seamless flow to the outdoors.
InHaus designer Tanya Campbell says the rear terrace is an enclosed dining area that is private and sheltered.
"To make the dining experience as convenient as possible, it was crucial that the indoor kitchen was near this courtyard," she says.
"We designed the kitchen island to run flush with the outer edge of the house. When you roll the sliders right back, this island doubles as a servery for the courtyard."
Enhancing the connection between inside and out, the cabinetry and handles on both sides of the island are at the same height. Both benches are topped in white CaesarStone. Two sides of the island are wrapped in the same stained marine plywood as the outdoor cabinetry, while the third side, in the interior, is finished in white.
