Classical design is often a good choice when you don't want a room to date
Writer Sylvia Plath said that there must be quite a few things that a hot bath won't cure, but she didn't know what they would be. With a view like this from the bathtub, it's easy to understand what she meant.
When the owner requested a classically styled ensuite bathroom from architect Philip Porritt, she wanted a view of the harbor, a look that wouldn't date, and a practical bathtub.
"The bath needed to be short so the client didn't feel she would slip under the water when sitting in it," says Porritt.
"We chose the cast-iron tub and floor-mounted bath faucet to match the traditional, elegant ambiance of the bathroom."

As with many bathrooms, functionality was carefully considered within the overall design, but Porritt says the room needed to offer more than just the basics.
"A luxurious atmosphere was a priority, and it was important to achieve an understated, classical look one that would meet current expectations, and still be good in 20 years' time.
"We incorporated a large glass shower cubicle with dual showering options and a hand-held, chromed brass shower head in the bathtub."
The basins and cabinets, which feature a granite vanity top, were individually designed by Jasmax to complement the traditional character of the bathroom.
Large wall tiles were specified, to give a feeling of spaciousness, and Porritt says for this reason, they required extra attention during placement.
"Because the wall tiles measure 40 inches by 13 inches, we needed a perfectly flush wall, to achieve a good result."
The master bedroom suite also includes a large dressing room and a study. These rooms retain the classically inspired decor.
