This remodeled kitchen is in keeping with the original country aesthetic of the house, but is functional for a modern family
A remodeling project is a good starting point for first-time homeowners or those buying in a new area. Perhaps the epitome of a successful remodel is when owners who had intended to move on completion of the project, instead decide to stay.
This was the case for the project shown here. Located on an island off the coast of Maine, the house was still in its original state, and the kitchen was small and unusable. Sheldon Tager of Belle Maison designed the remodel.

"The original kitchen was intended for servants to cook in, rather than being a social, family space," he says. "The owners wanted to keep the farmhouse aesthetic, so we used refurbished antiques and other furnishings that reflect this style."
Walls are lined in tongue-and-groove planks, and shelving is open for a sense of informality and spaciousness. An English dresser forms the kitchen island, and the stove is a reconditioned antique.
