Holistic spa meets architectural strength

The new Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa offers spiritual, mental, emotional and physical wellbeing – a marine-grade Dimond roof protects the culturally in-tune destination

Nestled along the serene shores of Lake Rotorua, Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa emerges not just as a sanctuary of luxury but as a profound celebration of cultural heritage, underpinned by a commitment to holistic wellbeing.

Developed by the Pukeroa Oruawhata Group over six years, this visionary spa stands as a testament to local iwi, Ngāti Whakaue's enduring legacy, with a distinct focus on the holistic concept of Te Whare Tapa Whā.

Wai Ariki transcends the traditional spa experience, embodying the four dimensions of Te Whare Tapa Whā: Taha Wairua (spiritual wellbeing), Taha Hinengaro (mental and emotional wellbeing), Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing), and Whenua (our connection to the land).

The architectural brilliance of Wai Ariki seamlessly intertwines tradition and modernity, paying homage to Ngāti Whakaue's cultural heritage.

Spiritual haven

The facility becomes a spiritual haven, guarded by six statues of Ngāti Whakaue tipuna and welcoming visitors with a blessing stone from Mount Tarawera.

This deliberate design invokes Taha Wairua, nurturing the spiritual wellbeing of those who seek solace within its walls.

Dimond Roofings' DD400 profile in ColorCote® AlumiGard PLUS, meticulously installed by T H Commercial, graces this cultural gem.

The roofing solution becomes more than a mere protective covering; it becomes a canvas mirroring the seamless connection between tradition and contemporary vision, contributing to the overall aesthetic and cultural integrity of Wai Ariki.

Designed to withstand the harshest conditions, ColorCote® AlumiGard PLUS was chosen as the coil of choice when it came to roll forming the DD400 profile – the epitome of durability and resilience.

Roofing choice ideal for severe marine environments

Its suitability for use in 'very severe' marine environments, right up to the waterline, and resistance to chemical or acidic exposure make it the ideal choice for a project of this magnitude.

One of the standout features of Alumiguard Plus is its use of marine-grade aluminium alloy – the same material used in boat building.

This not only speaks to the product's exceptional quality but also underscores its reliability in exposed or coastal sites. The durable baked-on paint system, comprising an acrylic or polyester top coat baked on a polyester primer, ensures resistance to UV damage, excellent gloss, and colour retention, making it a perfect match for the demanding requirements of the Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa.

The economic impact of Wai Ariki on the Rotorua community is profound, with an estimated annual contribution in the millions.

Beyond financial gains, the project brought employment opportunities, engaging approximately 180 individuals during the construction phase.

The decision to predominantly hire Ngāti Whakaue, Te Arawa, and Māori staff aligns with the vision of providing an authentic cultural experience, enriching the community and fostering a sense of belonging.

Holistic well being

As a haven for holistic wellbeing, Wai Ariki goes beyond the physical, addressing Taha Hinengaro and Taha Tinana.

The spa offers an array of experiences, from traditional mirimiri (massage) drawn from Ngāti Whakaue healing practices to cold plunge pools surrounded by hot, geothermal waters.

Each service is intricately designed to promote mental and emotional wellbeing, while also attending to the physical needs of the body.

Deep connection to the land

Moreover, Wai Ariki pays homage to Whenua, recognising our deep connection to the land.

The project's commitment to sustainability and community engagement is woven into its very fabric.

This emphasis on Whenua aligns with the pillars of sustainability, promoting environmental consciousness and cultural stewardship.

The economic impact of Wai Ariki on the Rotorua community is substantial, with an estimated annual contribution in the millions.

As Wai Ariki prepares to open its doors, it does so not just as a luxury destination but as a transformative force, intertwining tradition, community enrichment, and holistic wellbeing.

The spa stands as a beacon, not only celebrating Ngāti Whakaue's cultural heritage but also championing the interconnectedness of spiritual, mental, and physical health with our land – a testament to the enduring values of Te Whare Tapa Whā.
