Certain countries and regions have secured a reputation for fine cuisine that is recognized the world over France is one of these places. Along with the signature dishes comes a design aesthetic that is equally sought after. When the owners of this home were in the process of remodeling, they commissioned designer Elaine Hall Murray CMKBD to create a French farmhouse-style kitchen around the La Cornue range they had already acquired."Although the space is open plan, each zone has been designed to be very distinct," says Murray. "The kitchen area is contained within a galley format, with the range in pride of place as a separate entity. All other fixtures have been positioned along the rear wall, or can be found in the adjacent butler's pantry." A French limestone surround conceals the range from the dining and sitting areas, and complements the fireplace. The designer sourced a number of French antique pieces for inclusion in the design."All of the cabinets with the exception of the integrated refrigerator and microwave are antiques. This made for a lengthy process, as the pieces were sourced individually. It also called for a complex solution to incorporate the variously sized pieces into a coherent design scheme," says Murray. "The clients were delighted to take their time and enjoy the process in order to create the right environment, rather than sacrifice perfection for the sake of a quick and easy solution."Reclaimed French antique tiles were used for the flooring and also for the backsplash surrounding the La Cornue stove. French fabrics add another level of authenticity to the design."Like any rural French design, the idea is to create a sense that the whole has evolved over time. That is certainly the case here it's an organic evolution, only it happened over a period of months, not decades," says Murray.
