This kitchen represents a balancing act – functionality sits well with an exceptional aesthetic while staying true to the architectural integrity of the home

Designed by Simona Castagna & Darren Genner, Studio Minosa

From the designers:

The setting

At the heart of our design journey lies the transformation of a contemporary residence, a mere four years old, nestled in the leafy suburb of Epping, NSW.

Our endeavour was not merely a renovation; it was a visionary quest to redefine modern living – igniting spaces with vitality, functionality, and charm.

Navigating the redesign of this home posed a unique set of challenges, compelling us to push the boundaries of innovation while honouring the existing architectural integrity.

The constraints of established footprints and the necessity to preserve the concrete floor mandated a delicate balance between creativity and adherence to structural parameters.

Embracing these challenges, we reimagined spatial layouts, ensuring each element felt organically integrated and proportionate within its surroundings.

The kitchen

One of the pivotal challenges lay in negotiating the impact of a high void that perceptually diminished the original kitchen's scale.

To address this, we increased the height of the joinery, ensuring the kitchen sat proportionately in the space and exuded a sense of permanence and belonging.

It was paramount that the kitchen felt like it had always been an intrinsic part of the home, seamlessly blending with the existing architecture while radiating contemporary allure.

Amid these challenges, we were inspired by the aspiration for something extraordinary – a space that transcended mere functionality to become a sanctuary of sophisticated living.

Balancing functionality with an exceptional aesthetic became our guiding principle, infusing every detail with meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

The integration of Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances from the previous kitchen played a vital role in upholding practical continuity while reflecting a deliberate choice to maintain a thread of excellence throughout the home.

Moreover, the prevalence of natural light posed a challenge, demanding careful design decisions to enable us to balance brightness without compromising comfort.

Through strategic interventions, we harnessed the abundant natural light, infusing the space with a warm and inviting ambiance that complemented the contemporary aesthetic.

In conclusion, our design journey epitomises a harmonious blend of innovation, adaptability, and our drive to exceeding expectations.

From the heart of the kitchen to the soul of the residence, our design narrative unfolds, inviting inhabitants to embrace a lifestyle that is both refined and inspired.
