The building was designed by architect Charlie Nott, with the ultimate aim to achieve a 6-Star Green Star rating it is the first winery to be assessed under the Green Star NZ Industrial Building rating programme.As well as locating the winery in the vineyard to minimise travel and energy costs, the design team provided solar- and wind-powered electricity generation. Other sustainable design initiatives include rainwater collection and storage for irrigation, and the choice of environmentally friendly products and materials. Environmental Choice-approved Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel and Resene Lumbersider waterborne satin were specified for the bulk of the interior, which features the soothing hues of Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream, Resene Cut Glass and Resene Secrets.Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is a low-odour waterborne enamel that provides a durable, washable finish well suited to a busy workplace. This paint is also available in a kitchen and bathroom version, which includes silver and MoulDefender to inhibit mould and bacteria growth.Resene Lumbersider was used on interior timbers the paint is equally applicable for exterior timbers, where it helps protect against ultraviolet light and New Zealand's climate extremes.
