GIMME SHELTER
To ensure the Vector Arena was completely waterproof, the architects called upon Nuralite Waterproofing
WHAT LIES beneath? Seats for approximately 12,000 people. What lies above? A complicated roof shape that required special consideration to ensure complete and durable waterproofing.
The original Australian design of the Vector Arena roofs and box gutters was all in steel, says John Simmons, managing director of Nuralite Waterproofing.
"However, during construction, Peddle Thorp Architects recognised that the complex-curved, central hourglass-shaped roof areas and the very large box gutters would be extremely difficult to both install and waterproof in steel cladding."
As a result, Terry Gill, the project architect for Peddle Thorp Architects, and construction company Mainzeal, met with Phil Fry of Nuralite Waterproofing to evaluate the situation.
"After a series of design, application, performance, and costing tests were completed, a decision was made to use a Nuraply 3P coloured sheet waterproofing system to clad the hourglass roof and box gutters," explains Simmons.
Peddle Thorp was also concerned about humidity and possible condensation associated with capacity crowds in the arena, so the under-layer of the Nuraply 3P was customised with special ventilating qualities.
"The Nuraply 3P covered roofs and box gutters are significant visual components of the iconic structure. These areas also offer excellent access to roof and gutter areas for future maintenance and activity."
