Although an architect usually dictates what and where products and materials are used, a competent contractor can often provide invaluable advice.

Airpro Mechanical, who supplied and installed the heating and air-conditioning system at the Waitakere Stadium, were entrusted by the designers to identify design enhancements and possible cost-savings based on their extensive experience.

The architect supplied a brief schematic, stipulating the size and location of the systems. Once they received the plans, the company's project engineer, Jason Thorpe, in conjunction with the client and consultant, went about implementing some changes.

"The original design requested a centrally located system. But by installing separate controls in each room we were able to reduce costs and improve efficiency. We're often empowered to adjust designs. Although the size and specifications are usually illustrated, we're regularly required to complete the design details," says Thorpe.
