Birdblack Design was engaged to refresh this entire space with a new bathroom, ensuite, study and three bedrooms, as well as a new butler’s pantry and laundry. We were then engaged to finish the home with our Furniture Curation Package, from the larger furniture items right through to the décor and finishing touches. The principal aim of this project was to refresh. The building is of an older generation, leaving us with finishes that were tired, and function just as dated. To counter the previous blueprint, we designed joinery that blended seamlessly with the existing kitchen and flooring and created maximum storage and ease of use. This joinery makes their day-to-day functional and enhances the way they entertain. We retained the existing plumbing locations in each of the bathrooms, opting for a neutral, timeless palette of timber and tiles. The compact laundry and butler’s pantry is concealed by joinery doors that run the length of the kitchen. Likewise, in the dining room, the expansive joinery houses shelving for décor and bar storage.Mirroring the dining room joinery is the feature wallpaper – making the space feel grand. Not to be missed is the mesh pendant above the dining table – selected to avoid obstructing the seaside view, and to add elegance and set the tone of the penthouse. To capitalise on the entertainer value of this space, a custom full-length bar was designed in that faces the iconic harbour. The bar itself has been put on casters so that if needed, it can be moved around within the apartment. The mirror clad column now disappears as it reflects the surrounding landscape. Within each of the bedrooms, the wardrobes extend the full height of the ceiling allowing us to utilise pull-out drawers and pull-down rails so there is no dead space at the top of the wardrobe. Calming tones pair harmoniously with local photography by Warren Keelan.Similarly, the joinery in the study is dual use: primarily used as a remote workspace but can be converted into a guest room in moments. The entire apartment has been refreshed to reflect a sophisticated coastal interior, that breathes in the striking seaside views. Explore this coastal apartment redesign.
