from the ground up
The new Deloitte Centre references history by retaining the existing Jean Batten building facade. Brookfield Multiplex oversaw the construction
A solid foundation is the most important part of any new structure, especially when it's supporting one of the most historically significant facades in Auckland that of the Jean Batten building.
Brookfield Multiplex ensured that from the ground up, the new Deloitte Centre was built to the highest standard. Paul Feltham, Regional Director at Brookfield Multiplex, says that the four-storey basement was the first challenge.
"It's probably the deepest and most complex base-build in New Zealand to date," he says.
"The soil was wet, so we built a secant pile wall around the perimeter to dam the site.
"It was also extremely important to preserve the historic building. But when we pulled away the existing structure, it left the seven-storey facade exposed. We held this in place with a temporary structural steel gantry while we built behind it," he says.
The Green Star-rated building also has a twin-ventilated glass facade, which utilises natural light while blocking solar heat. This means that electric lighting and air conditioning usage can be minimised.
