from small beginnings
One of the elements that contributes to the appearance of the new stand at Eden Park are the architectural cladding panels supplied by Concretec
When the design brief from the project architect is complex or innovative, the most practical and effective way to figure out the best construction solutions may well be by building scale models.
Concretec New Zealand manufactured and supplied much of the precast concrete cladding and structure at Eden Park. This included architectural cladding panels, structural beams, canopies, parapets, balustrades, spandrels and the scrum panels, which are a key architectural feature of the southern and eastern entrance to the Eden Park stadium and feature complex 3-D shapes and an exposed aggregate basalt-look surface.
Director of Concretec Justin Bragg says the development of the steel moulds for these 3-D panels broke new ground as the exposed face of the panels exhibited a twist and multiple planes. "Initially, we were unsure how we would achieve a casting of the required shape, but after building a number of models we successfully created the moulds," he says.
Concretec worked closely with project architects and engineers, transforming their designs into almost 1000 working drawings for the construction of approximately 3500 tonnes of precast concrete components. Timely delivery of precast components allowed the project to run to schedule. To support construction on site, Concretec also applied finishing touches to final concrete work.
